Preparation for this new Rotary year started in January of this year when, together with 530 incoming District Governors from all over the world, I attended the Rotary International Assembly in San Diego.

Our incoming RI President, D. K. Lee, has clearly stated that the Rotary Emphases will remain unchanged. They are Water, Health & Hunger, Literacy and the Family of Rotary.

When choosing our service projects, we do our best to work in ways that will have the most positive, and most lasting, impact. But to ensure a better world for many generations, we must begin by taking care of our youngest generation, Lynn and Mohammadthe precious resource of every community.

Every child deserves the chance of a healthy life. Unfortunately, everyday, some 30,000 children under the age of five die from preventable causes. When somebody hears of this statistic, he or she can be forgiven for thinking that the number was an error. Unfortunately, it was not. Everyday, around the world, children die needlessly of pneumonia, measles and malaria. Thousands die everyday from lack of the most basic resource: water. And many more die from a combination of factors, in which malnutrition and poverty play major roles.

RI President's cheque presentation on behalf of CO2 Offset Trust
Written by Peter Sephton
Sunday, 22 June 2008

RI Convention - Solar Cooker ProjectRotary International's President Wilfred J Wilkinson today presented a check for $2,000 on behalf of the newly formed CO2 Offset Trust, to Fresno Rotary Club's Solar Cooker Project.

The money will be used to set up a Solar Cooking facility in Guatemala that will empower local people to cook without the need for open fires. The Solar Cooker removes the need to collect and burn firewood, provides nutritious food, reduces eye and lung diseases and provides safe drinking water. More details are at Fresno Rotary Club's website at http://www.rotary5230.org/UMAP.asp?FolderID=438

The CO2 Offset Trust - on the web at www.CO2OffsetTrust.com  - has been formed by nine Rotary Clubs from around the world to encourage Rotary Club members to offset their CO2 emissions by donating to the Trust, from which Rotary Clubs can draw matching grants for projects that reduce Carbon Dioxide emissions. The Trust has also given $2,000 to Harrogate Rotary Club to plant trees in Nidderdale, an area of outstanding natural beauty, which has become de-forested over the past 100 years.
